“Well, if it’s this bad again tomorrow morning, I might take you up on

the offer. We get stretches of fog like this along the coast a few times

during the year, and the car accident rate always skyrockets because of it.”

“That settles it. Assuming it’s safe enough to drive home this evening,

don’t you dare attempt coming to work tomorrow until it clears off.”

“Thanks.” Prue smiled. “My husband was a little upset. I told him you

needed me because of all these ghost hunters to feed and tidy up after.”

Prue took another sip of her coffee. “A bit of a disappointment, isn’t it?”

“What’s that?” Anne was thinking again of a walk on the beach.

“This ghost hunting business. I mean that séance yesterday was rather

bland. I expected a lot more excitement.”

“I know,” Anne said thoughtfully. “So did I.” And she realized that was

the truth. According to her brother’s notes the Craven crowd usually put

on a fairly exciting show. So far all the Creswell ghost had received was a

somewhat half-hearted attempt at contact. She had expected that real

phonies, such as Craven and his bunch were supposed to be, would resort

to more theatrical effects. On the other hand, perhaps the calm approach

convinced people they were genuine in their efforts. Then her mind

returned to the beach.

Would it be possible to navigate the path down to the cove in this fog?

Last night it would have been easier. At least then she would have had the

pale moonlight. This morning she wouldn’t be able to see more than a few

feet in front of her.

Ridiculous. The very notion of going for a walk in this gray soup was

idiotic. Anne shook off the idea as Sara walked into the room followed by

Dan Hargraves. Both greeted Prue and Anne politely, Sara acting as if

nothing at all had happened the previous night, and made casual

comments on the weather.

“Does this kind of gloomy weather help in making contact with the

ghosts?” Prue asked interestedly as she carted in a tray of toast and bacon.

“Surprisingly enough it does,” Dan said easily, helping himself to the

toast. “Atmospheric effects sometimes do seem to release more energy

that a presence can, in turn, utilize for contact. That’s probably why most

of the old legends involve dark and stormy nights,” he concluded with a

grin.

“Perhaps it is that the sensitives are able to tune in more easily when

the weather is unsettled,” Sara offered vaguely. “Where is Thomas?”

“I saw him in the library with Julian,” Dan said. “They looked pretty

involved in a discussion. I didn’t want to interrupt.”

“A most interesting discussion,” Craven said genially as he strode into

the room followed by a quiet-faced Julian. “Mr. Aries was just telling me

that Miss Creswell has plans to modernize the rather antiquated security

measures in this old place. I certainly would, if it belonged to me. There

are some extremely valuable items here.”

If a silent message was passed among the three ghost hunters, Anne

certainly couldn’t detect it. Part of the scheme had been to put the

pressure on them to make their move sooner than usual by implying that

security was soon going to be tightened.
